I am excited to share a major milestone in our ongoing effort to improve retirement fairness for California’s public safety employees.
On Sunday, AB 1383 passed the California State Senate on a unanimous 33-0 vote before returning to the Assembly, which approved the bill later that same day through a concurrence vote. With both houses of the Legislature now having approved the measure, AB 1383 is headed to the Governor for consideration.
This is a significant accomplishment for public safety employees across California, including many of our VCDSA members who entered the profession after 2013.
Passing legislation through the California Legislature is never easy, especially when the proposal involves retirement policy. AB 1383 faced challenges at every stage of the process, yet continued moving forward because public safety employees, local associations, elected officials, and advocacy partners throughout California remained engaged and committed to the effort.
What makes this achievement particularly meaningful is that AB 1383 is now positioned to become the first significant legislative reform to PEPRA since the law was enacted more than a decade ago. Reaching the Governor’s desk is a milestone many believed would be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve when this effort began.
The process, however, is far from over.
As AB 1383 moves to the Governor for consideration, VCDSA will continue working with PORAC and our partners throughout the state as we enter the next phase of advocacy. We encourage members to stay informed and watch for future updates and important communications in the weeks ahead.
With the legislative process complete, AB 1383 now enters its final stage.
The Legislature has done its part. The focus now turns to the Governor.
